A 17-year-old has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and dangerous driving charges in connection with a fatal car crash that killed 18-year-old footballer Nick Campo in Perth, Australia. The incident occurred last July during a late-night celebration of Campo's birthday.

A 17-year-old at the time of the offence, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and five charges of dangerous driving over a fatal crash that killed young footballer Nick Campo in Perth ’s southern suburbs last July. Campo, who was celebrating his 18th birthday, died and several others were injured when a Toyota HiLux he was a passenger in rolled and collided with a Jeep during a late-night smash on Farrington Rd in North Lake.

The accused, who cannot be named, appeared by video link from Banksia Hill on Tuesday to enter his pleas. He has spent three months behind bars after asking for his bail to be revoked as a show of remorse. Defence lawyer Michael Tudori said his client was “distraught”. 'There’s no winners,' he said on Tuesday. 'He’s obviously coming to terms with the fact he’s caused the death of his friend.'\Nick Campo’s sister Eva said today’s plea was a “step in the right direction for justice for Nick”. “No amount of sentencing or jail time will ever make what happened to Nick OK,” she said. The teen will be sentenced in May. Campo was an aspiring footballer who played for the South Fremantle Football Club’s colts side. “Nick was a bright young man with true talent and a love for football,” the club said in the days after the crash. “He came through our talent pathway and played colts at South Fremantle for the past two years. “His loss has been felt heavily across the football, cricket, and wider WA communities.”\Campo’s teammates Tyler Rowe and Josh Jackson were also passengers in the Toyota and suffered injuries in the crash. Rowe, 18, sustained severe head injuries and several broken bones, and was in a coma for more than a week. “All I can remember is rocking up to the party, seeing everyone, meeting a lot of new people...next minute I was in hospital,” Rowe told 7NEWS. Jackson, 18, revealed he tried to book an Uber on the night of the crash but could not work it out on his phone. “And then (I) just ended up getting in this car because it was a lift and then all of a sudden I’ve just woken up in hospital. That was it,” Jackson, who suffered a broken arm and bruising, said. The pair added their voices to the “Call out for Nick” campaign, an initiative started by Campo’s parents, encouraging people not to accept bad and dangerous behaviour on the roads. Last year was the deadliest on WA roads since 2016, with authorities scrambling to find answers to the soaring number of fatalities. A road safety summit was held in September and legislation restricting young drivers to just one passenger for the first six months of their P-plates was announced the following month
