Konstas’ inclusion has pushed McSweeney out of the frame after both he and fellow opener Usman Khawaja mis-fired across the first three Tests against India. Neither has made a score above 40 this series, but it is the recent debutant who has been made to pay the price. South Australia captain McSweeney had never opened in a first-class match before his first three appearances for Australia.
He set a new BBL record as the youngest player to score a half-century during his debut for the Sydney Thunder on Tuesday night. The right-hander also made a century playing for the Prime Minister’s XI against India at Manuka Oval earlier this month. “It motivates me a bit more,” Konstas said. “Obviously it would be a dream come true if I got that opportunity.”Subscribe to our cricket newsletter for our writers' thoughts on the biggest stories and a review of the week’s action“Obviously you get more confident the more time you spend in the middle facing really good bowlers,” he said. “Trying to test myself, challenge myself, is the main thing.
