Six teenagers were apprehended by Victoria Police after a crime spree across Melbourne's east on Sunday, involving the theft of two vehicles and a high-speed chase that reached speeds of 140km/h.

Six teenagers were arrested in Melbourne on Sunday evening after a high-speed pursuit involving air wing and K9 units. The chase began after Victoria Police received reports of an aggravated burglary in Rosanna, northeast of Melbourne, around 4 am. A silver Mercedes sedan was stolen from the property while the occupant was home. The same group of teenagers allegedly stole a Toyota wagon from a property in Hawthorn East around 6 pm.

Police located the abandoned Toyota and spotted the stolen Mercedes, leading to a high-speed chase. The driver of the Mercedes fled, reaching speeds of up to 140 km/h on the wrong side of the road. The chase continued on foot, with Victoria Police's Air Wing tracking the offenders and a K9 unit assisting in the arrest. The six teenagers, aged between 14 and 18, were apprehended at a property on Kooyongkoot Road, in Hawthorn. Those arrested include two 16-year-old boys, a 16-year-old girl, and a 14-year-old boy, all from the LaTrobe Valley area, as well as a 15-year-old boy from the Port Phillip area and an 18-year-old man from Healesville. A spokesperson for Victoria Police praised the success of Operation Trinity, a night-time task force targeting burglaries and car thefts since March 2023. The operation runs from dusk until dawn across Melbourne and is Victoria Police's most well-resourced frontline policing operation, with 70 additional police – including Dog Squad, Public Order Response, and Air Wing – rostered each night. Victoria Police claims Operation Trinity has resulted in the arrest of 673 burglars and car thieves over the 12 months to September 2024
