Shadow immigration minister Dan Tehan has claimed the Albanese government's emergency laws targeting foreign criminals released by the High Court last year are 'just a charade', after it emerged not a single application has been made for preventative detention.
Shadow immigration minister Dan Tehan has expressed alarm at the revelation zero applications have been made for preventative detention of foreign criminals released by the High Court last year, branding the situation"deeply concerning".
In response, then-Immigration Minister Andrew Giles passed a set of emergency laws allowing the government to apply through the courts for a"community safety detention order" for serious offenders, in order to prevent them being permanently released. Speaking to Sky News Australia on Tuesday night, Mr Tehan branded the laws a"charade" as he demanded the government explain why it had failed to take steps to protect the community from harm.
