When Australia’s women attempt to reclaim their Rugby Sevens Olympic crown in Paris later this year, two sisters will be part of the campaign to win the rarest of Aussie gold medals.
Two Aussie sisters who have turned down rival footy codes are set to be breakout stars at the Paris Olympics, where they’re going for gold.
The sisters are a classic modern day case study in the competition for the next generation of Australian sporting talent. “At the moment, the opportunities Rugby Sevens gives you, you can’t challenge that with any other sport at the moment,” Maddi said.“This year the Olympics is our big focus. We always say we don’t close off any doors. The beauty with Sevens at the moment is we’re young, able to travel and play for our country, which is so special especially at such a young age.”“To pull an Aussie Sevens jersey on for your country is such an epic moment. It’s the pinnacle in sport, the Olympics.
The 2032 Brisbane Olympics are also on the distant horizon — the sisters will 29 and 30 years old at the time of the home Games. “We look back at Tokyo and use that as motivation. No one wants to feel how we felt walking off the field against Fiji after that loss. New Zealand, Fiji and France, the teams who finished on the podium in Tokyo, loom as their biggest rivals in Paris.
