Telstra and Optus are confident services won't suffer when they switch off their 3G networks later this year but rural landholders with patchy reception are not convinced.
Telstra is confident its customers will still be able to make calls after the June 30 shut off as 3G towers are upgraded to 4G.
"They're projecting out to Murwillumbah where there's more people, but because we're directly under, we lose it," she said. One of the researchers says he hopes the results will help to remove some of the emotion from the long-running debate over 5G.Ms Porter said her Telstra home internet service was connected to 3G as she couldn't get a 4G signal at her house.
Telstra has the biggest mobile phone network in Australia, with 11,302 sites, while Optus has 8,821 sites. Mr Taylor could not say what might be limiting Ms Porter's service in the Tweed Valley, but said 3G equipment was not going on new towers.
