Maturing with the Roadrunners since joining the program in 2022 after a stop at junior college, Martavius French is competing for a starting spot this spring.

Ronald CortesSigning with Tennessee as a four-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, linebacker Martavius French stepped into an environment with lavish facilities and unlimited amenities.

Finding a second chance in the FBS as he signed with UTSA last February, French needed some time to acclimate to the Roadrunners’ culture, coach Jeff Traylor said, but the junior has started to carve out a role in the defense. As French began to get a feel for his new environment, he said he latched on to the UTSA culture pillar of integrity, trying to do the right thing no matter how many eyes were on him.“I just want to earn the coaches’ trust, and I want to earn my teammates’ trust,” French said. “They can trust me to make plays or be here for a game and not have to worry about my grades and stuff like that.”
