This news report covers various tennis matches happening across Australia, including the Brisbane International, United Cup, and Australian Open. It highlights notable performances, player rankings, and challenging conditions faced by the athletes.

The Brisbane International gets underway on a scorching South East Queensland day, as the United Cup continues in Sydney and Perth. It's shaping up to be a good tournament, with two-time Brisbane International winner Victoria Azarenka waiting in the second round for both these Brisbane International debutants. A decent run here would do wonders for both women, both currently ranked outside the top 100 in the world.

Joint is an interesting case, just 18 years old - the second youngest in the draw, playing in just her fourth main-level Tour match. It was hot yesterday and it's just as uncomfortable today, so both women will have to work hard to stay cool. Norway is fighting back through its world number six-ranked star Casper Ruud, but not without a fight. In a marathon first set that lasted over an hour, Ruud has come out on top against Tomáš Macháč 7-6 (6). We're underway in the West, as German veteran Laura Siegemund, the world number 21, takes on Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia, the world number 17. Siegemund has won three of the four matches these two have played against each other though, dating back to 2013. Not good news for baby Hewitt in Canberra, who has dropped the first set in a tie breaker to Brandon Holt. It was a wild set for the Canberra native, who had a chance to serve out the set at 5-3, was broken, had to save set points early in the tie break, gave up a couple, threatened to smash his racquet a couple of times and ended up losing it after a marathon tie break 11-9. Looks very windy in Canberra, so not easy for either man, and the stats kinda illustrated that, with low serving percentages all around. Hewitt will be kicking himself though — he only converted two of the six break point attempts he had in the set, while Holt was two-from-two. Those of you with us last night would have enjoyed seeing Alex de Minaur power past Tomás Etcheverry in straight sets
