Tensions were high in Sydney ahead of the annual celebration but organisers remained hopeful that the event would reunite the community.
Police were uninvited from the celebration after Senior Constable Beau Lamarre-Condon was charged with the murders of couple Jesse Baird and Luke Davies but that request was then overturned. As is tradition, the 'Dykes on Bikes' group revved the crowds' engines as they started off the parade. The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade began in 1978 as a march to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York and has been held every year since to promote awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues. The first parade resulted in police violence and arrests, which led to a defining night in Australia's cultural heritage. After a decision by the NSW parliament, 3000 people marched incident-free in 1979 and the celebrations grew over the years.Mardi Gras earned $9.
