Tens of thousands of Britons volunteer spare rooms for Ukrainian refugees | Rob Harris
More than 100,000 Britons have volunteered their spare rooms and homes to Ukrainian refugees fleeing their homeland following a brutal invasion by Russian military forces in just 24 hours after a new scheme opened.
More than 1.8 million have crossed into Poland, and while state institutions, local authorities, charities and individuals have rallied to provide support to refugees, a number of large Polish cities have declared over the last week that they are struggling to cope with the influx. They have called on the government to seek help from the European Union and the UN.
The website – Homes for Ukraine – states: “This bespoke scheme will offer a route to those who want to come to the UK who have someone here willing to provide them with a home. “It’s fantastic that over 100,000 people and organisations have recorded their interest in supporting Ukrainians fleeing the war through the Homes for Ukraine scheme,” he tweeted
