SAN DIEGO – Title 42 is set to expire alongside the nation’s COVID-19 state of emergency on May 11.
The pandemic-era legislation allows the U.S. to block asylum seekers from entering the U.S. on the grounds of emergency health circumstances. In the weeks prior to the legislation’s expiration, roughly 7,000 migrants were being detained at the southern border every day. As May 11 drew closer, upwards of 12,000 migrants were estimated to have gathered near Juarez, Mexico waiting to cross the border into the U.S.
