British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been moved to the intensive care unit of a London hospital as he suffers from persistent symptoms of coronavirus

A Number 10 spokesman said the prime minister was admitted on Sunday because his coronavirus symptoms persisted, more than seven days after testing positive for COVID-19.

"Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the Prime Minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital," the spokesman said."The PM is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication."Johnson was moved into intensive care at St Thomas, a few mins drive from Downing Street, just before 7pm local time.

Before he was moved into intensive care, the prime minister asked Dominic Raab, the foreign secretary to deputise. He self-isolated for seven days, in accordance with UK government guidelines but continued to work and lead the national fight against the virus.Health Secretary Matt Hancock, tested positive for the virus on the same day as Johnson but has made a full recovery and fronted media since.

Johnson's 32-year-old pregnant fiancee, Carrie Symonds, revealed on Sunday that she too had been self-isolating with the symptoms but had recovered.Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle said Johnson's admission into intensive care was "terrible news." "I know the thoughts and prayers of everyone across the House are with the Prime Minister and his family right now," Hoyle said.
