A 400-year-old building in Copenhagen is on fire as devastated residents watch on.
A blaze was reported at the Borsen, the nation’s historic stock exchange , early on Tuesday morning .The conflagration started during renovation works and the building was covered in scaffolding and cladding. The cause of the fire is not yet known.The area has ben evacuated and firefighters are still working to control the ”very extensive fire”.Construction on the Børsbygningen began in 1619 with the support of Danish king Christian IV.
The modern Danish stock exchange is located elswhere and the building is now the Danish Chamber of Commerce headquarters.Preparations were under way to celebrate the building’s 400-year anniversary.“Terrible pictures from Børsen this morning; 400 years of Danish cultural heritage is in flames,” culture minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt wrote on X.The building is on Slotsholmen, an island in Copenhagen’s harbour, right next to the Christiansborg Palace which houses the Danish parliament.
