Anthony Albanese says Labor MPs will have a free vote on ending a Howard-era ban on euthanasia laws in the territories, signalling he is likely to vote to overturn the prohibition.

on ending the Andrews Bill, the 1997 legislation that barred the territories from legalising euthanasia, originally championed by former minister and Liberal MP Kevin Andrews.Louie Douvis

Since then, each of the states have created legal assisted dying schemes or taking significant steps to begin the process. The South Australian Labor government plans to bring forward its voluntary euthanasia scheme to January 2023.Asked his view, the prime minister said he would consider the private members’ bill once it is finalised. It is likely to be co-sponsored by Mr Gosling, the MP for Solomon in the Northern Territory, and Ms Payne, who represents the federal seat of Canberra.

“In my view, people in Australia should not be treated any differently and with less rights if they happen to live in Canberra compared with living in Queanbeyan in the state of NSW, and similar issues apply to the Northern Territory.” Similar private member’s legislation was narrowly defeated in 2018, but support from Labor, the Greens and Senator Pocock should be enough for the new push to pass the Senate.
