Terry Francona's retirement at season's end has been the worst kept secret in Cleveland for two months.
The Guardians printed “Thank You, Tito” T-shirts that will be distributed to fans on Wednesday. A video tribute will appear on the scoreboard prior to the game. Without making anything official, Francona joked that the giveaway was a clear indicator his tenure has come to an end.
Francona said his reticence when it comes to announcing the decision comes from his deep respect and love of the game. Francona said he grappled with the decision from about the middle of June until the middle of August. He apologized to Guardians players for getting “a little quiet” while working through the process, but said once he got there, he started to feel better.
