SALT LAKE CITY — The Rockets were “relieved” with the results of an MRI performed on guard Jalen Green, leading to hopes he will not need to miss too much time after the All-Star break, a person informed of the test results said Friday.
The Rockets will not have a better idea on a timetable for Green to return from a strained groin suffered inuntil early next week, after several more days of treatment. A more severe groin strain could have forced Green to miss a much larger portion of the 24 games remaining on the Rockets’ schedule.
Injuries such as Green’s can be particularly unpredictable, especially in the early stages, and the Rockets will be especially cautious with Green’s rehab and eventual return. But the MRI confirmed the initial diagnosis of a strain and indicated that if Green does miss games when the season resumes next Friday at Golden State, he would miss considerably less time than the month he missed last season with a strained hamstring.
Green, who was forced to skip Friday’s Rising Stars games during the All-Star weekend, is the top scorer among second-year players, averaging 21.8 points per game. Although he struggled with his shooting touch on the three-game road trip prior to the All-Star break, he had seemed to have turned that around. He had averaged 3.1 3-pointers per game on 36.4 percent shooting in his past 22 games after making 30.7 percent of his 3s in the first 32 games of the season.
Green, who turned 21 last week, was the ninth player 20 or younger to have at least 2,200 points, 400 rebounds and 350 assists, joining Carmelo Anthony, LaMelo Ball, Devin Booker, Kobe Bryant, Luka Dončić, Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards and LeBron James.
