A subpar game by Davis Mills in the Texans' Week 2 loss at Denver led to pointed words from coach Lovie Smith on Monday.Welcome to Film Room, where we’ll review the tape from the Texans’ last game and break down its most significant portions with a critical eye. So, fire up the projector. Pull out the notepad. Set the phone aside. Let’s dive in.After two games, it’s become clear that the passing game is the largest issue for the Texans.
Smith has been Mills’ biggest advocate since the offseason began. He backed Pep Hamilton’s elevation to offensive coordinator because it was “a must” to continue developing Mills. But Smith on Monday was the most critical of Mills as he’s ever been, matter-of-factly stating that Houston’s passing game “still hasn’t accomplished what we’ve been setting out to do with it.”
“We had the ball first-and-goal at the 4, correct?” Smith. “You’ve got to be able to score a touchdown in that area. Davis is our quarterback.” Pierce was nearly equally efficient in Houston’s run-heavy packages as he was when they deployed three wide receivers or more .
