The Aggies have added just three players from other schools while seeing at least 24...

Texas A&M got a boost when starting quarterback Conner Weigman decided for a second straight year not to play baseball.COLLEGE STATION — Bobby Petrino is out and about recruiting for Texas A&M, the first time the Aggies’ new offensive coordinator — who has heavily recruited in the state — can tell prospects he’s recruiting to a Texas school.

The Aggies under coach Jimbo Fisher appear to be counting on a “year older, year wiser” approach in leaning on the starters who led them to a 38-23 upset of then-No. 5 LSU in A&M’s season finale at Kyle Field. Three standout players who did — running back Devon Achane, safety Antonio Johnson and cornerback Jaylon Jones — have declared their intent to enter the NFL draft and bypass their senior season, as expected.

Cornerbacks Tony Grimes from North Carolina and Sam McCall from Florida State and receiver Tyrin Smith of UTEP all should compete for immediate playing time. A&M swung and missed on a couple of transfer linebackers, but returning starters Chris Russell and Edgerrin Cooper are back for another round. Weigman won the starting job in the second half of the Aggies’ 5-7 season and is expected to be the clear-cut starter springing into this year, one more reason he is not listed on the 2023 A&M baseball roster.
