Here’s what to keep an eye on in the 79th meeting between old Southwest Conference foes.
Max Johnson is expected to get his second straight start at quarterback for the Aggies as they battle Arkansas on Saturday. But whether he can stay upright against an Arkansas team that leas the nation in sacks is another matter.COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M switched quarterbacks and immediately added some urgency and savvy to the offense — the problem is that the production hardly changed.
But in the end he was 10 of 20 for 140 yards and a lone touchdown pass, and the Hurricanes sacked him three times. Those numbers won’t cut it against Arkansas, and here’s why:Arkansas leads the nation with 17 sacks, and three of the SEC’s top four in sacks wear Razorbacks red . Meantime, A&M’s offensive line is the team’s biggest weakness, which likely has Sanders & Co. licking their collective chops.
The lone two touchdowns allowed in the first three games occurred in Week 2, when Appalachian State defeated A&M 17-14 at Kyle Field. The Aggies held Miami to three field goals, although a conservative approach and the Hurricanes’ refusal to try to convert fourth downs in A&M territory certainly helped the Aggies’ cause.
A&M’s leading rusher, Devon Achane, has 196 yards. Arkansas’ second-leading rusher, Jefferson, has 169 yards. Arkansas has been a threat on the ground , while the Aggies haven’t been able to get rolling behind their shaky offensive line.A&M fans in particular don’t seem to care for the neutral-site arrangement with Arkansas. The Razorbacks appear to appreciate it more because of the recruiting inroads it allows the program in North Texas, where the Aggies should already be established .
