Texas honey law could sting beekeepers | Opinion

Beekeepers across Texas seem to support the truth-in-labeling effort, but not all agree that HB 590 is the way to address the problem. That’s in part because the single-sentence bill lacks the nuance to provide enforcement mechanisms and integrity in decision making around what is and isn’t Texas honey., says addressing the adulteration of honey is important, but he feels this bill, as written, will not help the industry.

The bill’s author, Rep. Ernest Bailes, R- Shepherd, says that as written, the bill addresses such a concern. As it stands, there are no laws on the books to protect consumers from producers who label their products 100% Texas honey, but who bottle honey from other states or countries. There is no way to hold dishonest sellers accountable. Supporters say there are health concerns involved, too: Texans who consume local honey in order to acclimate to local allergens could be consuming a product that’s not even from the U.S.

Why so much buzz about honey transparency and pollen testing? Because, under the proposed law, violators could be put in jail for up to six months. That should concern every Texan, whether they are honey lovers or not. When laws are passed that are not carefully thought out, people could end up with a legal fight on their hands through no fault of their own.
