Texas hoping ballyhooed freshman class beefs up OL

Texas freshman Kelvin Banks Jr. front, was the nation’s third-rated offensive lineman out of Humble Summer Creek.AUSTIN — They talk about Cameron Williams like he’s Paul Bunyan, as if he’s simply too colossal to exist outside the realm of folklore.

“Man,” junior halfback Bijan Robinson said to his new king-sized shield, “you are a large human being.” Arlington Bowie’s Devon Campbell was the No. 1 interior lineman in the nation, and Humble Summer Creek’s Kelvin Banks ended his career as the third-ranked tackle. Allen’s Neto Umeozulu ranked just three spots behind Campbell and 91st nationally. With only three starters returning, Texas will rely heavily on at least a couple of those freshman at what Sarkisian regards, along with quarterback, as one of the two most challenging positions for college rookies.

That Week 2 visit to Arkansas served as a litmus test for how “SEC ready” Texas was, and the results were disastrous. The Razorbacks dominated both sides of the line, rushing for 333 yards and four touchdowns, limiting the Longhorns to 257 total yards and 3.4 yards per carry, and racking up 10 tackles for loss plus two sacks.

If all seven freshman linemen stepped onto an industrial-sized scale together they’d weigh a collective 2,265 pounds. That’s beefier than Bevo XV and on par with the average male bison. Star tailback Bijan Robinson averaged 5.8 yards per carry last season, the fifth-best mark among Big 12 players with at least 100 carries. But nearly 70 percent of his 1,127 rushing yards came after first contact, and Robinson ranked just 173rd in yards before contact per rush in 2021, per Pro Football Focus.
