A bill establishing a new protection unit that would tap regular citizens to help secure the border is on the agenda Wednesday by a House panel

The 10-member committee would provide “objective research, analysis, and recommendations to help guide state border safety policies,” the bill said.The committee would also oversee the “Border Protection Unit.” The lieutenant governor and House speaker would serve as joint chairs of the committee and each would appoint four members of the chambers they run.
His bill also includes establishing a new fund to compensate border-area landowners for damage to their property and new court programs to handle border-related legal matters.
