Texas Pool gets its due as a historic landmark in Plano | Opinion
Originally, the pool was for members only, most of whom were neighborhood residents. In 1963, non-resident memberships were offered at a steep $30 per family, which would be $300 today. The civil rights movement was in full swing, with Black Texans staging sit-ins at Dallas diners and department stores to demand desegregation.
Today, however, the pool brings a diverse community of swimmers together. Memberships are still available, but the Texas Pool Foundation, which has maintained the pool since 2013, has made it open for anyone to swim for a $10 fee..” The entrance has a “Little Free Pantry” that stocks food donations. Janet Vermillion Moos, founder of the Texas Pool Foundation, told us the pantry usually empties every day, indicating that the pool is helping reduce food insecurity in the neighborhood.
In 2018, the foundation got a grant from Plano’s Heritage Commission to resurface the pool and restore the original tiles — red mosaic dots with lettering that marked 14 different cities. If you swim to the bottom of the pool today, you’ll be able to “visit” these different cities. By 2019, the pool got a listing in the National Register of Historic Places. This year, after rezoning the property, Plano city officials officially named the pool a historic landmark, which we hope will generate even more local interest.Too hot for a road trip this summer? Then consider a trip to the Texas Pool. Dive into the Panhandle, the 10-foot deep section, and swim in the gently salted water down to the kids section in Brownsville.
