, though the closures happened for different reasons. In November, the Texas Department of State Health Services closed TX-1 because of an outbreak of norovirus illness associated with raw oysters. The department at the time also told people to discard oysters to avoid getting sick from the outbreak.

Ultimately, the outbreak led to about 230 suspected cases of illness in eight states including 65 suspected cases in Texas, according to the health department.The new closure will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 17 and continue until size thresholds are met, the wildlife department said. After TX-1 closes, only one Galveston Bay oystering area will be open, according to the department. Six other areas will be open in Matagorda Bay, Corpus Christi Bay, Lower Laguna Madre and Aransas Bay.. Years of coastal storms destroyed and damaged oyster reefs, and boats crowd over those that remain. Strict state regulations have made things harder.

In 2021, the oyster season that was supposed to last six months ended in less than three because the state effectively closed every reef., who pleaded for the state to open more fishing areas. State officials, however, have said fisheries need to be closed to promote growth and reef recovery.
