Texas junior Lucas Gordon pitched a gem. The Longhorns’ outfield put on a defensive performance worthy of Cirque du Soleil, with some timely hits to boot. And No. 2 seed Texas defeated No. 3 seed Louisiana 4-2 Friday afternoon in the weather-delayed first game of the NCAA tournament Coral Gables Regional.
Gordon allowed his lone run in the top of the sixth. Prior to that, he’d kept the Ragin' Cajuns’ offense muzzled with a vexing blend of low-90s fastballs and devilish changeups. And when needed, the Longhorns had the lefty’s back. While UL plated the game’s first run on a two-out drive later that frame, Campbell’s dazzling grab kept the damage to a minimum. That lead lasted all of one batter, too.
