The Therapeutic Goods Administration has provisionally approved the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for children aged six months to five years.

The mRNA vaccine is currently cleared for use in Australia for those aged six and above - but the TGA’s decision on Tuesday could allow the younger cohort to receive the two shots.

“If I had a message to parents of children under the age of five today, it is to consider getting your child vaccinated for flu.” The TGA made the decision after considering data from the KidCOVE clinical trial which was constructed across Canada and the United States using more than 6,000 participants aged between six months and six years.

The administering of the Moderna vaccine for children will be done in two doses 28 days apart in the same way it is with adults.
