The Therapeutic Goods Administration has rebutted suggestions from scientists that some rapid antigen tests in use in Australia are not fit for purpose., developing what they called a world-first testing standard.The researchers used a fluorescent protein to determine whether the tests could detect COVID-19 proteins at low levels.
“We need a reliable reference standard to rank all current and future RAT devices and ensure that their performance is accurately communicated to healthcare providers and the public.” In addition to the sensitivity argument, concerns have been raised about the impending expiry of millions of RATs held in stockpiles around the country.An analysis by the ABC earlier this week suggested about 5.5 million tests are due to expire in the next three months in Queensland and Western Australia alone.
