Thailand’s constitutional court has dismissed Srettha Thavisin just a week after dissolving the country’s most popular political party.
Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been sacked in an unexpected court decision on Wednesday that plunges the nation’s fragile democracy and economy into further turmoil.Thailand’s most popular political party and banning its leaders for a decade last week, the Constitutional Court agreed 5:4 with accusations from the military-appointed senate that Srettha had engaged in unethical behaviour when he handed a cabinet post to a former lawyer with an allegedly sketchy history.
Most pundits expected Srettha, who has been in the job for about a year, to be cleared. Only last month he received a royal decoration from King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Even by the standards of Thailand’s fractious democracy, which has endured two military coups and the banning of five popular political parties in the last two decades, this week has been momentous.
