Health authorities in Thailand have begun administering AstraZeneca for people who have received at least one jab of the Chinese-manufactured Sinovac vaccine as the outbreak grows from the Delta variant of COVID-19.

AstraZeneca will now be given as a second shot to boost the immunity for people who have received one dose of the Sinovac vaccine, the country's Health Ministry announced on Wednesday.

There has been public unease after the government endorsed the plan to mix the vaccines, with limited research on the strategy. During a press conference, virology expert Yong Poovorawan from Chulalongkorn University, said 1200 people have already been given the combination of AstraZeneca and Sinovac due to allergic reactions to their first doses, requiring them to change vaccine.Mr Yong highlighted a recent study of 40 people showed an inactivated Sinovac shot followed by one of the viral vector AstraZeneca resulted in a similar build-up of antibodies to someone who received two shots of AstraZeneca.

China has exported 122 million jabs of Sinovax and 165 million doses of their Sinopharm vaccines to more than a dozen countries around the world, according to data from Duke Global Health Innovation Centre.
