followed the journey of Rodríguez, a migrant from Venezuela, as he traveled from Del Rio, where he was captured by the Border Patrol, to Washington. Rodríguez said the ride helped him save time and money to get to New York, his final destination, where relatives and a construction job offer awaited him.

He kept his black canvas shoes.“Not everyone wants to get on those buses,” said Tiffany Burrow, director of operations at VVBHC.
Thirty hours of travel might sound unbearable to some, but sitting in a climate-controlled bus, with food and protection, was a perfect welcome to the U.S. for these migrants. Their arrival on the night of April 21 was memorable for Rodríguez and the others as they drove past some of the city’s landmarks.
With the Capitol behind them, the two buses stopped and the migrants got off. Many smiled, soaking up the lights of the big city. A group of volunteers escorted the arrivals into Union Station. There, they assisted them in contacting family members or gave instructions about how to get somewhere else. Some were given sweaters for the colder weather or backpacks to carry their belongings.
