The Serbian tennis ace has thanked his fans for their 'continuous support' as he waits in hotel detention amid a visa dispute which could see him deported before the Australian Open.
The world’s number one tennis player arrived in the country to play in the Australian Open but he was unable to provide proof of vaccination or a medical exemption which led to his visa being cancelled.
Novak Djokovic has spoken out for the first time from hotel detention, thanking his fans for their"continuous support". Picture: Clive Brunskill/Getty ImagesThe 34-year-old’s message comes after he spent his second night detained in Melbourne amid an ongoing legal battle to have his cancelled visa overturned.
Following the visa cancellation the Victorian and Federal Governments have attempted to shift the blame as to how Djokovic was initially given a visa. However letters between the Commonwealth and Tennis Australia revealed the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation would not accept supposed “natural immunity” as a reasonable alternative to an approved COVID vaccination.
“How people participating in that event get into the country is a matter for the Commonwealth government who are responsible for issuing visas for people to enter the country.” Djokovic’s father joined in the criticism saying his son’s detainment is a politically motivated move against Serbia.
