‘That’s the reality’: Why Allegra Spender won’t go it alone on donation disclosure | michaelkoziol
Independent candidate for Wentworth Allegra Spender says she won’t declare her donations in real time because her Liberal opponent won’t follow suit and her donors - many of whom have lucrative government contracts - fear retribution if their support is exposed.
“I’m fighting a really hard election ... I know that I need a lot of money to do that,” she told her “politics in the pub” audience at Waverley’s Charing Cross Hotel on Monday night. Ms Spender claimed members of the Liberal Party had told associates that one of her supporters, whose identity is public, “is never going to get on another government board again”. “I just think that’s actually disgusting, but I have to say that’s the reality of it,” she said.
Businesswomen Jillian Broadbent and Wendy McCarthy have publicly announced their support for Allegra Spender.Under current rules, only donations above a certain threshold must be disclosed. The Australian Electoral Commission publishes the disclosures for each financial year the following February.
