In an attempt to address the city’s housing crisis and soaring population, the government will significantly increase housing density in 10 key neighbourhoods.

The 10 centres identified are Broadmeadows, Camberwell Junction, Chadstone, Epping, Frankston, Moorabbin, Niddrie , North Essendon, Preston and Ringwood.Tens of thousands of homes will be built across some of Melbourne’s busiest suburbs as the Allan government moves to seize planning control of more than 100 neighbourhoods in the city.

The government hopes to eventually expand those urban development plans to 120 locations across greater Melbourne. Urban design plans should “consider scalability, with the immediate goal of applying the process to the initial 10 activity centres, and a long-term vision of expanding to all 120 activity centres across Melbourne”, the documents say.

“The activity centres are a key part of our bold housing reforms that will deliver the 800,000 new homes Victoria needs over the next decade.” “The hope from us as a council is that we’ll pull our weight in our major activity centre, but we’ll be asking the state government to leave our suburbs alone – for example, Croydon Hills, North Croydon, Heathmont, East Ringwood, those sorts of places,” Steane said.
