The development will reshape the area into a hospitality and residential precinct and is part of wave of capital transforming the CBD of the state’s second-largest city.
It will include a new hotel, conference centre and about 60 apartmentsPlans by Amber Property Group to turn an entire Geelong city block into a $280 million hospitality, conference and residential precinct have received the green light from Victorian Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny.
Under the new approved plans for “Cunningham Place”, Amber will build a 5000-square-metre conference facility with a 650‐seat auditorium, a 168‐room luxury hotel and more than 60 apartments on the near-half-hectare site bordered by Gheringhap, Corio and Clare streets and Transit Place, and just one block from the Geelong waterfront. The development will also include bars and restaurants, a supermarket, co-working spaces and a medical centre.
Amber’s project has been capped at a height of 60 metres or 17 storeys, a small reduction on the original 63 metres sought.Once completed, ACTS Global Churches will take ownership of $35 million of assets comprising the conference facility and one level of car parking. The remainder of the project, including the hotel, will be retained by Amber and its investment partners.
“This development will provide significant benefit to the Greater Geelong tourism industry by providing modern waterfront accommodation within walking distance of the Cunningham Pier and a short drive to the Spirit of Tasmania,” Mr Clay said.
