It’s the racing off-season, what else are you going to do but read?
The motorsports season ended weeks ago–or months ago, depending on what you consider motorsports. All that’s going on now is a little testing here and there and maybe some drivers being fired. Likewise, your hot rod is all bundled up in the garage under that car cover you paid a bunch of money for. So what’s a motorhead to do? Consider reading.
With this book, Wilkinson, a North Carolina native, brings us the biggest names from the founding generation of stock car racing in America, from Big Bill France Sr. to Humpy Wheeler, Banjo Matthews and Wendell Scott. Each one gets an introduction from Wilkinson laying the groundwork for each character. Then, in the style of Studs Terkel, she hands the microphone over to them and we read their transcribed stories in their own words. It’s the perfect way to see them.
You don’t have to be a race fan to appreciate this book. In many ways it transcends mere racing and becomes a slice of American history, of stock car racing’s rise from backwoods dirt tracks and moonshiners to an international media powerhouse. For fans as well as the rest of the reading populace, it’s well worth the read. Can there be too many retellings of the Shelby legend? Even by the same author? No! We want to hear this story over and over again.
Collier’s new book is about the importance of seeing collector cars as touchpoints in time. Each car in his own extensive collection—The Revs Institute—represents something of the times that produced it, Collier says, and any new owner of any significant collector car is beholden to maintain and share that history. The Revs Institute also houses thousands of books and other sources of historical data on the automobile, making it a little like that seed bank in Norway.
