The Allman Brothers Band became a word-of-mouth favorite after two studio albums, but more than with any other band of the ‘70s, only a live LP could have packaged their explosive and unique sound well enough to push them to platinum sales for the first time. With two lead guitarists and two drummers, the Allmans produced an enormous sound onstage, with extended instrumental workouts that turned the 5-minute “Whipping Post” into a 23-minute behemoth.
