When I first read Chekhov as a student, in my twenties, I was too young to appreciate his quiet storytelling, his athletic imagination and grace, his comic turns. The stories are now part of my life – and I’m grateful to him for deepening my understanding of what it means to be human, and credit these stories with teaching me how to read and write.
