This weekend's Classic 100 concert reminds us to celebrate the magic of instruments and the stories they tell to us, for us and about us, writes Zan Rowe.

It's a question I'm often asked by musicians as I quiz them about the connection to theirs. The response is made in jest but my lack of ability sure isn't for lack of trying. It began with the recorder, the most rudimentary of the bunch and what many parents would consider an instrument of torture. With my tiny hands, I found the little holes to cover and create sound, make music.

Various attempts at the guitar dotted my formative years. I can still play those two chords I mastered, back and forth, a proud little mantra just for me. I never learned how to read music so when I looked at the page, it was all a blur. This felt like the barrier keeping me from ever playing an instrument properly.

Filling your lungs then expending them in a big, beautiful song is good for your health. Singing in a group connects us, the same way playing in team sports or collaborating on a project does. Glen in Werribee picked up the harmonica after listening to the Classic 100 countdown, inspired to live his rock star dreams again after a football finger injury made him put down his guitar.
