JULIA GUTMAN: I think for the first three weeks that I was working on this project, I couldn't actually look at the Opera House. I had to like avert my gaze and I still think I haven't quite registered that it's actually going to be on the sails of the Opera House.
Each Julia Gutman’s artworks begins with textiles donated to her from her friends and family. From that she takes them, she ripped, she sews, she resews, she applicates and embroiders them into a unique universe. It's not the same anxiety as starting with something blank. Like you're always starting with a story or with a history or with kind of a person in mind. So there's just this intimacy from the beginning.The pleasure about the lighting of the sails is that it's a commission which allows the artists to fully extend themselves and create a vision that is wholly theirs.
