Yves Rees’ book tells the story of 10 Australian women who left the country to find their way in early 20th-century America.
When author and historian Yves Rees started travelling in a post COVID-19 world, they realised how many landmines stood in their way at the airport alone. Their most recent passport revealed “a person with long hair and red lipstick … and an ‘F’ listed under ‘sex’.”
, Rees offers up this revealing snippet, and although their new book focuses on the stories of 10 Australian women who left Australia for America to pursue their dreams a century ago, it is this chapter that allows the reader to understand why Rees was so drawn to the material.Like the pioneering women in their book, they, too, had to travel to foreign territory, exploring an unknown world in which the rules and customs were not completely familiar.
