Chris's job search exemplifies the widespread issue of 'ghosting' in the Australian job market. New LinkedIn data reveals that over half of Australian job seekers have experienced this lack of communication from hiring managers. This article explores the challenges faced by both job seekers and hiring managers in the current job market, including the high volume of applications, difficulty matching skills to job descriptions, and the struggle to negotiate competitive salaries.
Chris, a Sydney-based analyst, has been searching for a new job for almost a year and has faced the frustration of being ghosted by numerous hiring managers. Since leaving his position at one of the Big Four banks in February 2024, Chris has sent out hundreds of applications but has yet to find success. He often receives no feedback on why his applications have been unsuccessful, leaving him in the dark about his prospects. This experience is unfortunately not unique to Chris.
New data from LinkedIn reveals that more than half of Australian job seekers have encountered the phenomenon of being ghosted by hiring managers, with 57% reporting a decrease in communication from recruiters. Chris shared his frustration, stating, 'There's no 'thanks for your application ... unfortunately you were unsuccessful,' so there's no real insights as to why?'LinkedIn's Career Expert, Cayla Dengate, explained that the current job market presents unique challenges for both job seekers and hiring managers. With about three in five Australians planning to seek new employment in 2025, hiring managers are inundated with a high volume of applications, often exceeding the capacity to provide individual feedback. Dengate highlighted that 95% of HR professionals report receiving applications that fail to meet the specified job criteria, making the task of screening and selecting candidates even more demanding. Furthermore, 41% of Australians struggle to align their skills with job advertisements, adding an extra layer of complexity to the application process. To address these challenges, LinkedIn is introducing a new job match feature designed to help members understand how their skills and experience align with open positions. This feature aims to improve the efficiency of both job seekers and hiring managers by highlighting suitable matches and reducing the number of irrelevant applications. However, even with a perfect skills match, Chris emphasizes the difficulty of negotiating competitive salaries in the current job market. He recounted an instance where an agency approached him for a role similar to his previous position, but the offered salary was approximately 25% lower. Despite these obstacles, Chris remains optimistic about his job search, having already submitted five applications by Wednesday. He hopes to receive a response from at least a couple of them, indicating a possibility for progress in the competitive landscape of the Australian job market
