According to star Zoë Kravitz, The Batman explores Selina Kyle's transformation into the classic DC villain Catwoman. The upcoming movie from director Matt Reeves stars Robert Pattinson as a new version of the titular superhero, set outside the DCEU continuity that features Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne. After experiencing production delays due to the ongoing pandemic, The Batman is scheduled to hit theaters on March 4.
Set in Wayne's second year of vigilantism, The Batman notably includes new versions of three major members of the Dark Knight's rogues' gallery. Of these, Paul Dano's Riddler has so far been positioned as the main antagonist, with this depiction of the character drawing inspiration from the real-life Zodiac Killer.
To see a person like Selina really get in touch with her power and become Catwoman? That’s a journey that I’m really interested in exploring. We haven’t quite seen that yet. We usually meet Catwoman, and it’s either a very quick transformation – an overnight thing – or she’s already there. And so to find the emotional journey that brings her to the place where she is making the choice to be this person, is what I’m really excited about.
Catwoman has been portrayed four previous times in live-action films, and as Kravitz says, they have all appeared as either fully-formed, as with Anne Hathaway's version in The Dark Knight Rises, or transform quite suddenly, as Michelle Pfeiffer does in Batman Returns. That Selina will undergo a more extensive coming-of-age in The Batman suggests her character plays a key role in the narrative, mirroring Bruce's own stage of development as a crimefighter.
Kravitz's comment also hints that her arc in the film could bend towards villainy, beginning as a friendlier burglar and ending as a fully formed supervillain. Should that be the case, the cooperation depicted in the Cat and the Bat trailer could end in betrayal once the Riddler is taken care of. In any case, fans are eager to see how Kravitz interprets the beloved character in The Batman, and they don't have much longer to wait now. .
