Meg O’Neill is the chief executive of oil and gas producer Woodside. She answers our CEO Q&A.
I’ve always enjoyed leading teams, I’ve always enjoyed tackling interesting problems, and I’ve always enjoyed learning. Every role I’ve done has had a whole bunch of new things to learn, and you know there are aspects of the CEO job that you don’t really understand until you’re in it. So, it’s been fun. It’s been challenging, but it’s been fun.Do you check the Woodside share price every day?
Of course. But I can’t control the share price on the day. What I can control is how the company is positioned to deliver value for shareholders today, next year, five years, 10 years down the road.I’ve always had a bit of a travel bug, and enjoyed learning about different cultures, and wanted to be in a field where I have the opportunity to travel and the opportunity to work abroad, she says. So, the energy industry’s been really perfect.
So saying “yes” has opened a number of doors for me. Being flexible, being open-minded, taking on whatever challenges have been posted has paid huge dividends for me.. I get the Before the Bell bulletin. I have a coffee. I get round to looking at the oil price, but whilst the oil price on the day is interesting, I try not to get too worked up one way or another based on the price of the day.
The price on the day is interesting because it will influence quarterly results, which the market is always keenly interested in. But the reality is that we need to be thinking about the 20-year time horizon.I love sport. As a young person I played a lot of sport. I played basketball, ice hockey, soccer, rugby union. It’s a very long list. Now that I’m a bit older I play a little bit of sport and watch a lot of sport. So now it’s a little bit of netball and a little bit of golf.
