But like a smoke detector, Kozo says a home fire extinguisher should be mountedthe kitchen. “If you have a fire in your kitchen and it starts to spread quickly, you’ll be flailing around trying to find it,” he says. “We recommend keeping it just outside the kitchen so if there’s a fire in the kitchen, you’ll be able to access that extinguisher.
Kozo says most residential fire extinguishers are good for about 10 years, and if you can’t remember how long you’ve had yours, look for the date that’s stamped on the bottom. You should also check the pressure gauge on your fire extinguisher every time you test your smoke detectors. If the arrow is in the green zone, you’re good, but if it’s starting to fall into the red, it doesn’t have enough pressure and it won’t be as effective in case of a fire.
