So! Festive!
The morning of Christmas Eve is, therefore, a rushed affair. Stores open until midday, allowing last-minute shoppers and hosts to make mad dashes for the last gifts and groceries before a welcome hush falls over the country for several days. It is not a time for leisure, in other words, or for a cozy Christmas breakfast.
But the morning of Christmas Day is another story. Berlin, the city where I live, falls silent, the streets emptying out completely. The quiet feels magical. The candles on the tree are lit again, children reassemble among the detritus of wrapping paper and ribbons to contemplate their gifts, and the adults nurse their cups of coffee.
