Main image: With the help of a local ranger from the Blue Mountains, Callie made her way to this location before nightfall. As the last light faded out, she saw a twinkle. Just one. Then another.
Then another and very shortly after, the whole cavern seemed to come alive with swathes of twinkling lights. Photograph: Callie CheeBioluminescence is a chemical reaction that occurs inside an organism. It is often used to warn or evade predators and to lure or detect prey.
