The book I read every Christmas: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – every teen should read it 🔵 If you know a young teenager who isn’t old enough to read it yet, give it to them. Their parents will never know ✍️ IanDunt for ipaperviews
Then I read the first line. “We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.”
Immediately I realised that this was one of the greatest things that had ever happened to me. Someone had handed me something dangerous. Someone had managed to sneak in contraband beyond the parental borders of the home. I read it quickly, amid all the festive paraphernalia of Christmas trees and glistening baubles, and it changed my life.
The drugs were obviously profoundly exciting, not only for what they did but for what they represented. They were totems of fuck you. Their wanton use in completely inappropriate surroundings, at one point literally in the middle of a police convention, indicated that there were people out there who really couldn’t care less what society demanded of them or the legal consequences of doing so.
But there was also something going on with the writing itself, some kind of extremely effective procedure for transmitting information. Thompson’s authorial voice was incredibly vivid and consistent. He was able to use a slap-dash assortment of all the pause mechanisms in the English script, from ellipses to colons and hyphens, to create sentences which flowed and yet were staccato at the same time.
In the background of it all, there was something unexpected: an angry sense of morality. A righteous indignation at his country and the people who made it the way it was. And beyond even that, a deep sense of longing for the 60s, when it had seemed full of hope rather than the emptiness which currently faced him.
