The Boys' parody of Wolverine, Groundhawk, is an insulting oversimplification of the character, yet despite that, Marvel essentially made it canon.

The Boys is an entire franchise dedicated to absolutely trashing established superheroes, including the entire superhero genre itself, and Wolverine is no exception. What is interesting about The Boys’ parody of Wolverine, however, is that Marvel actually agrees with it, as The Boys’ biggest Wolverine insult just became official Marvel canon.

Wolverine is a tragic and complex character whose life has been filtered through the worst of what humanity has to offer. The rage inside of Wolverine is ever-present, which fuels him in battle yet plagues him in life, though it also pushes him to be the best hero he can be. While these traits add to his intriguing character development, The Boys boiled it all down to ‘angry little guy is angry and little’ with its parody of Wolverine, Groundhawk.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Wolverine Became a Parody of Himself Worthy of The Boys In X-Force #40 by Benjamin Percy, Paul Davidson, and Robert Gill, the X-Force are whisked away to a potential future where Beast became something of a ‘mutant god’, throwing the world into ruin in pursuit of his own twisted vision. The X-Force quickly come across the mutant rebellion, where they meet this alternate future’s version of Wolverine.

The desolate landscape of the X-Men’s dark future seems to indicate that Wolverine should have been killed in some previous battle, but the resistance against Beast needed him to keep fighting, so they took what remained and rebuilt him to suit their needs. Wolverine was reduced to an actual killing machine, and every aspect of his character that made him intriguing became hollow and two-dimensional.

Thankfully, this tragic version of Wolverine is just in a potential future, and isn’t a permanent reworking of the character. But, given his inclusion in Marvel lore, this future Wolverine is an official Wolverine-variant, making him an established version of the fan-favorite character. And the best part is that he’s exactly like Groundhawk, making The Boys’ biggest Wolverine insult official Marvel canon.
