Comedians and politicians are among many who have paid tribute to comedy great Barry Humphries after his death on Saturday.

“For 89 years, Barry Humphries entertained us through a galaxy of personas, from Dame Edna to Sandy Stone, but the brightest star in that galaxy was always Barry,” the prime minister wrote on social media.

“Australia has lost its finest cultural raconteur, its most brilliant satirist, and its greatest cultural comedian with the passing of the witty and wonderful Barry Humphries AO CBE,” Dutton wrote. Shaun Micallef said “no one made me laugh as much or for so many years”. And Phillip Adams acknowledged his near-contemporary’s contribution to Australian cultural life, while taking issue with this masthead for declaring he had exited stage left. “Barry was never left,” he wrote of the famously conservative performer. “Stage right, please”.News of Humphries’ death broke just hours after the Melbourne International Comedy Festival announced its major prizes on Saturday.

While Humphries might have shared some scepticism over trans rights issues with the moral crusaders behind those efforts, his most famous creation, Dame Edna Everage, might never have seen the light of day had he been forced to operate under them.
