The career setbacks that made author Bri Lee step away from a career in the law, and take up writingThe career setbacks that made author Bri Lee step away from a career in the law, and take up writingBefore Bri Lee was an author, she had the job that every law graduate dreams of: an associate to a judge.
I don't know if I thought it was my calling, but I just started doing it in primary school. My parents always really encouraged all kinds of extracurriculars: cultural, sports, intellectual, whatever it was. And what I can see in hindsight was that I had to start with musical theatre and then figure out that acting was the only part of that I was really drawn to.
And then while I was an associate, I applied to do a second year of an associateship and got to the interview trial stage with three different judges in different courts and f***ed up all three of those interviews and opportunities. And I was pushing really hard to make the law my profession, and it didn't work out.
One of the things I can think of is that I was trying to jump through those hoops because I felt that that was what one should do. And although I feel now, with hindsight, that I was able to turn the worst thing that was ever done to me into something that is the thing I'm most proud of – getting meaningful law reform, being a part of the #MeToo
